A BIG!!! THANKS TO THE MANY VOLUNTEERS AND SUPPORTERS WHO PARTICIPATED IN THE "2ND. ANNUAL HOLIDAY CELEBRATION IN TRINITY GARDENS". A TURKEY AND FOOD GIVEAWAY!
YOU MADE THIS EVENT A TREMENDOUS SUCCESS - GREAT JOB!!!
On Friday night and Saturday, December 14 and 15, a cadre' of over 75 church and community volunteers packaged and distributed 300 turkeys and over 10,000 lbs. of fresh fruit and vegetables to more than 420 families from Trinity Gardens and surrounding communities at the "2nd. Annual Holiday Celebration in Trinity Gardens". A Turkey and Food Giveaway for the community.
The event is sponsored by Greater Houston Development, Inc. - a nonprofit, community-based affordable housing developer for new construction and rehab primarily in northeast Houston, Trinity Gardens Church of Christ - Joseph's Storehouse Pantry, Kashmere Sr. High Alumni Association, and 1st. Class Training - a Bellaire-based, minority-owned, world class fitness center owned by Antoine Armstrong and wife, Dawn. (Antoine is a former professional football player with the San Francisco 49ers and Miami Dolphins and now a successful entrepreneur.)
Turkeys were donated by a special philanthropic family. A special thanks to Antoine and Dawn of 1st. Class Training and Andre' Walker, Vice Chair of Greater Houston Development, Inc.
Our hats are off to the Houston Food Bank for their generous donation of fresh vegetables and fruit. The Trinity Gardens neighborhood, as most inner-city neighborhoods, is considered a "food desert" especially fresh vegetables and fruit due to the limited number of grocery stores accessible to the community. The pricing for food in the small, local neighborhood grocery stores is extremely expensive for area residents. There is only 1 major grocer - Fiesta Mart with 2 locations each approximately 1 1/2 to 2 miles from this neighborhood.
The volunteer distribution team was led by Trinity Gardens Church of Christ - Joseph's Storehouse Pantry and included community groups such as Kashmere Sr. High Alumni Association, Houston Community College System - NE - North Forest Campus, Coalition of Community Organizations (COCO), Kashmere Sr. High Football Players '12, etc..
Special deliveries were made to the "Sick and Shut-in" by local churches and community-based
organizations including St. John's Baptist Church, Forest Lawn Missionary Baptist Church, Coalition of Community Organizations (COCO), Homestead Road Church of Christ, Pleasantville's SPRC, and TGCOC - Seniors Ministry.
